This is a painting I did based on a photograph of Yuja Wang, an amazing concert pianist featured in last week's New Yorker. I've been listening obsessively to her work and watching her in YouTube videos. She's astonishing (and wears these incredible dresses that are very unconventional for a concert pianist). The source photograph is by Pari Dukovic, whose work is always phenomenal.
This is one of the candy still life paintings in a series I've been wanting to start. I really like working with the simple subject matter and the bright colors; I'm concentrating on composition as well as trying to improve the values and hues of my washes. I'm also very interested in the intricacies of painting shadow shapes, and learning about the subtleties of the varied edges and reflected light within the shadows.
