shoe dreams

The Shoe Dreams show developed out of an attraction to strong still-life design, along with the intriguing idea that a person’s shoes can form the basis of an illuminating portrait. Many of the shoes in this show belong to me, and as I painted them, they formed a dreamlike story of places I have been and experiences I’ve had. Other pieces depict shoes belonging to friends, providing an opportunity to get to know a subject through their possessions. While some of the paintings are executed more traditionally in ink and watercolor, others have been created by using an abstract acrylic underpainting or previously completed oil portrait and then merging the shoe painting with the background.
