instant art show #5

an albers color theory show

Welcome to the fifth Instant Art Show, which is all about color theory! Based on the ideas of Josef Albers, an early twentieth-century painter and educator, this week’s artwork looks at the idea that our perception of color depends on context. It’s also turned out to be my first opportunity to create an installation with my artwork, which has been really fun! You can learn more about the ideas and process of this week’s Instant Art Show in the video below:

This week’s show was really fun to make, and I loved talking about the ideas behind it in the video, but the best part of this week’s show was installing the artwork in the studio! I’ve always been fascinated by installation art, but have never had the opportunity to try it myself before, so I learned tons of things in the process. Thinking about the space takes much different twists and turns when considering possibilities for installation, and ideas about scale and quantity become much more interesting. I also found that by varying the sizes, depths, and formats of the panels, I could create many more interesting design possibilities. And after my most recent First Friday show, I decided to use the pieces to create a second installation that will be on view during our upcoming group exhibition on Saturday, October 21, 5:30-8:30, so come on out and see it if you’re in the Ashland area. I’d love to talk with you about the artwork and give you a guided tour of my first installation!
